Emission compensation for RUS participation to EXPO 2020 DUBAI
The forum "Universities in action for the UN 2030 Agenda" saw the participation of 46 people at the Italian Pavilion in Dubai: these were representatives of RUS Universities and representatives of some of the projects which, in the months leading up to the Universal Exposition, contributed to spreading, above all to the student community, the principles of the UN 2030 Agenda and its SDGs.
The 46 participants' air travel to Dubai resulted in the emission of approximately 32 tons of CO2 into the atmosphere measured using ICAO's Carbon Emissions Calculator. In March 2022, the emissions were fully offset through the purchase of certified carbon credits from the Henriette solar PV project, described below.
The credits were purchased by RUS through the company Carbonsink c, which cancelled 32 Verified Carbon Units (VCU) certified by means of the "Verified Carbon Standard".
Henrietta solar pv project
Henrietta Solar is a mitigation project that combines renewable energy production and agriculture in Mauritius, an island severely exposed to climate change and classified as a Small Island Developing States (SIDS).
The project, through the construction of 53,700 solar panels, is able to provide sustainable energy 40,000 people while preserving an agricultural area of more than 20 hectares. The solar panels will be able to generate approximately 26,500 MWh by replacing the country's energy mix with clean, renewable energy, dramatically reducing associated greenhouse gas emissions.
The project provides concrete economic help to the country by reducing dependence on energy imports on energy imports, mainly coal and oil, and contributing to the country's energy self-sufficiency.
