Fontanelle Project: Follow the Drop

Università degli Studi di Cagliari

Date and location: November 27-28, 2023, Università di Cagliari

Description

To reduce the use of plastic packaging, UniCa has launched a project to enhance the drinking water from the city's water supply, installing a series of fountains directly connected to the city's water network on its campuses.

The fountains provide free drinking water for the entire university population. In this way, the aim is to encourage the use of tap water instead of packaged water, leading to a significant reduction in packaging and climate-altering emissions associated with the production, road transport, and disposal of packaged water containers.

The underlying idea of the initiative is to avoid the production of waste, even recyclable waste. A simple yet educational idea that is gaining great success among the university population, which extensively uses the drinking water fountains and even requests more.

As a complement to the initiative, the University has distributed thousands of stainless steel water bottles to newly enrolled students during the Welcome Day for freshmen.

The Fontanelle project is undergoing further expansion through the installation of other fountains in the Monserrato Campus.

The initiative is characterized by specific vertical signage placed within the campuses, which will also be enriched with a visual-pedestrian path to guide people to the water dispensing points.
