No food waste!

Università degli Studi di Roma "La Sapienza"

Date and location: November 18-22, 2024, Dining points at the University City, Marco Polo Building, and Villa Mirafiori

Partners: Dining point managers (RML SRL, FOOD SERVICE SRL, GMA SERVICE SRL, CIRFOOD SC, GESTIONE SERVIZI INTEGRATI SRL)

Description

Food waste is out of taste! was the slogan chosen this year by the European Commission for the SERR 2024: food waste. EU countries, in fact, produce over 59.2 million tons of food waste every year, which corresponds to 132 kg per person. Based on this reflection, Sapienza worked with the dining point managers to ensure that, during SERR 2024, the daily food surplus, starting from an agreed time, could be purchased by the entire university community at a 50% discount from the initial menu price. To promote the initiative, all university communication channels (social media, mailing lists, newsletters, official website, etc.) were used, and graphic materials were distributed to the managers. The initiative was very successful, so much so that there are plans to make it a weekly event at least once a week.

All participants were provided with a kit consisting of gloves and bags for collecting waste.
