EVENT
The University of Macerata, in collaboration with the other universities of the Marche region – University of Camerino, Marche Polytechnic University, University of Urbino Carlo Bo – and with the support of CAI Marche, COSMARI, Legambiente Marche, Plastic Free, and Civitanova Green Life, is organizing a walk along the Chienti River on Saturday, October 5th, 2024 (meeting at 9:30 AM at the Basilica of Santa Maria a Piè di Chienti, with return expected by 4:00 PM).
The walk follows a flat route mostly along the river, from the Basilica of Santa Maria a Piè di Chienti in the Municipality of Montecosaro (MC) to the Imperial Basilica of Santa Croce al Chienti in the Municipality of Sant'Elpidio a Mare (FM), covering approximately 7 km each way. Participants are encouraged to bring work gloves, as a clean-up and river litter monitoring activity will be conducted along the way in collaboration with Legambiente Marche.
THEMATIC ANALYSIS
During the walk, a clean-up and river litter monitoring activity will be carried out in collaboration with Legambiente Marche. Specifically, in addition to cleaning along the route, a monitoring of the riverbank will take place, aimed at collecting data on the presence and types of waste either abandoned locally or brought by the currents. This type of survey, following a special standardized protocol, helps assess litter pollution and develop strategies for the prevention and protection of river ecosystems. Through this activity, participants will have the opportunity to directly understand the origin and impact of waste on biodiversity and make a tangible contribution to environmental conservation. Additionally, there will be discussions on the topics of pollution in the lower Chienti valley, sustainable mobility, and the circular economy, as well as the historical, artistic, and architectural features of the Basilicas.
