The Role of Marine Protected Areas in the Fight Against Climate Change and Marine Litter

The Mediterranean Sea, due to its configuration and location, is particularly exposed to climate change and marine litter. Marine protected areas are one of the most effective tools in combating marine waste, protecting biodiversity, and implementing effective strategies to counter climate change.

The event aims to promote the strategic and privileged role of Mediterranean marine protected areas in monitoring the effects of climate change, supporting adaptation and mitigation efforts, raising environmental awareness on the issue of marine litter, encouraging sustainable tourism, and involving local communities as active participants in the economic, social, and cultural transition.

The event venue, the Castello di Milazzo—overlooking the Capo Milazzo Marine Protected Area—will provide an opportunity to showcase exemplary actions and experiences promoted by the Capo Milazzo Marine Protected Area Management Consortium.

The event is part of two activities promoted by the Network of Universities for Sustainable Development (RUS): Action for Climate 2024 and RUSClean.
